What Do I Do With the Results?

Families

If a newborn screening specimen is received that is contaminated, scratched, oversaturated, or unacceptable in any way, it is termed “unsatisfactory” and the healthcare provider will be contacted to arrange the collection of a repeat screen.

In the case of an abnormal test result, the healthcare provider (Medical Home) listed on the newborn screening card will be contacted by the Newborn Screening Program. A letter will also be mailed to the family. The healthcare provider may need to contact the family to arrange for an additional screening or confirmatory testing.

More information about test results can be found in our Practitioner's Manual.
